From December 2004 Porsche will offer a 500bhp upgrade for the current 450bhp Cayenne Turbo that can be carried out either by the factory or your own dealer. Torque increases from 460lb ft to 515lb ft.

The extra power derives from larger intercoolers and re-calibration of the engine management system. As part of the package the brakes get an upgrade too, with new aluminium six-pot front callipers. These allow a 12 per cent increase in pad area to work against the bigger 380mm front discs; the rear discs grow to 358mm.

Performance gains are relatively modest - claimed top speed goes from 165mph to 167mph while the 0-60mph sprint drops from 5.2 to 4.9sec - but they need to be seen in the context of a 2.4-ton off-roader. The price of this option is £10,223, if fitted at the factory.

The Cayenne also gets the option of a panoramic glass roof that's four times larger than the current sunroof. It features three glass sections that can be set in 15 different configurations.
